“Fully staffed” is one of the most-used phrases in luxury villa rental — and one of the least precise. Two villas can both be advertised as staffed and deliver completely different experiences: one has a housekeeper who comes for a few hours each morning, the other has a chef, a butler, a villa manager, and daily housekeeping built into the rate.
Because the term isn’t regulated, the only thing that matters is what is confirmed in writing for your villa, on your dates. This guide explains what each service level actually means in Los Cabos, which roles you might find on a villa team, what’s typically included versus billed separately, and the exact questions to ask before you book.
The three service levels you’ll actually encounter
Most Los Cabos villas fall into one of three tiers. The labels vary between companies, but the substance is fairly consistent.
1. Self-catering (no staff, or minimal)
You have the villa to yourselves. There may be a periodic housekeeping visit, and someone maintaining the pool and garden, but there’s no chef, no butler, and no daily service. You cook, you shop, you clean up. Rates are lower, privacy is absolute, and the trade-off is that the work is yours.
2. Staffed (partial service)
The most common tier in the luxury market. Typically this means daily housekeeping and a villa manager or on-site contact, with chef service available on request rather than included. This is the tier where the most confusion happens — a villa can be legitimately described as “staffed” while the chef is an optional add-on billed separately.
3. Fully staffed
A working household team, present daily during set hours. Depending on the property this can include a villa manager, chef, kitchen support, butler or server, daily housekeeping, and grounds and pool maintenance. The house is cleaned while you’re at breakfast, meals are cooked and served, and someone is coordinating the day. This is the tier people picture when they imagine a staffed villa — and it’s the one worth confirming precisely, because it commands a premium.
The roles you might find on a villa team
Not every villa has every role, and headcount varies with the size of the property. These are the positions that commonly make up a Los Cabos villa team:
- Villa manager / house manager — your single point of contact. Coordinates the staff, handles issues, arranges services, and manages the rhythm of the house.
- Private chef — plans menus, shops, cooks, and serves. May be included in the rate or arranged as an add-on. See our guide to how private chef service works in a Los Cabos villa.
- Kitchen assistant / sous — supports the chef in larger houses, particularly with big groups.
- Butler or server — table service, drinks, poolside service, and the details that make a house feel run rather than rented.
- Housekeeping — daily cleaning, beds, laundry, and turn-down in some properties.
- Pool and grounds — pool chemistry and gardens, usually early morning and largely invisible to guests.
- Security — common in gated communities such as Pedregal, Palmilla, and Puerto Los Cabos, often provided at the community level rather than by the villa.
- Driver — occasionally included at the top end; more often arranged separately.
What’s included versus what’s billed separately
This is where most misunderstandings start. Even in a fully staffed villa, several things are commonly not in the nightly rate:
- Groceries and provisions. Almost always billed at cost, on top of the rate. Your chef shops, keeps receipts, and you settle. A staffed villa is not the same thing as an all-inclusive resort.
- Gratuities. Customary for villa staff and normally paid at the end of the stay. Ask what’s appropriate for the size of the team — it’s a real line item worth planning for.
- Extra hours. Staff work defined hours. Late dinners, early departures, and party service usually mean additional hours, arranged in advance.
- Bar and premium beverages. Often purchased at cost like groceries.
- Events. A villa dinner for your group is one thing; a 40-person celebration is a different arrangement, often with extra staff, rentals, and an event fee — and sometimes owner approval.
Staff hours: the detail people miss
“Fully staffed” rarely means 24 hours. In practice, villa teams typically work daytime and evening service hours — arriving in the morning, serving through dinner, and leaving afterwards, with the house yours overnight. Many guests actively prefer this: full service during the day, complete privacy at night.
What matters is knowing the schedule before you arrive, especially if you have a late-arriving flight, early golf tee times, small children on a different rhythm, or a celebration dinner that runs long. All of it can usually be accommodated — but it needs to be arranged, not assumed.
Six questions to ask before you book
Ask these of any villa, anywhere, and the ambiguity disappears:
- Exactly which roles are included in the rate, and how many people are on the team?
- Is the chef included, or arranged separately? If separate, what is the structure — daily rate, per meal, plus groceries at cost?
- What hours does the staff work, and what does it cost to extend them?
- How are groceries and beverages handled — pre-arrival shop, settled at the end, cash or card?
- What is customary for gratuities for a team of this size?
- What requires advance notice or approval — events, extra guests, additional service?
Any serious villa company will answer all six in writing without hesitation. If the answers are vague, that’s your answer.
Where staffing matters most
Service level isn’t a luxury add-on for every trip — but for some, it’s the entire point:
- Large groups. Cooking for 16 to 24 people on holiday is a job, not a pleasure. In houses like Villa Turquesa (10 bedrooms, sleeps 24, Pedregal) or Villa Tranquilidad (8 bedrooms, sleeps 16, Puerto Los Cabos), a working team is what makes the group actually feel like a holiday. Browse more villas for large groups.
- Families. Early breakfasts for kids, separate adult dinners, and a house that resets itself daily. See family-friendly villas.
- Celebrations and milestone trips. Birthdays, anniversaries, and reunions where you want to be a guest at your own party — see our guide to villas for large groups, weddings and celebrations.
- Short, high-value stays. If you have four days, spending one of them shopping and cooking is an expensive way to save money.
How service works across our Los Cabos collection
Most villas in our collection can arrange a private chef, and a smaller group are fully staffed — including properties such as West Enclave 8 (6 bedrooms, sleeps 16, Puerto Los Cabos) and Villa Peñasco (6 bedrooms, sleeps 14, Pedregal).
Because staffing, hours, and inclusions vary by property and season, we confirm the exact team, schedule, and what’s included in writing before you commit — no assumptions, no surprises on arrival.
Frequently asked questions
Does “fully staffed” mean staff are there 24 hours?
Usually not. Villa teams typically work defined daytime and evening hours and leave after dinner service, giving you the house privately overnight. Extended or overnight coverage can often be arranged in advance for an additional cost.
Is a staffed villa the same as all-inclusive?
No. Staffing covers the people; groceries, beverages, and gratuities are typically additional and settled separately. Some villas can be arranged on a more inclusive basis — it needs to be structured and confirmed in advance.
Do I need to tip villa staff?
Gratuities are customary in Los Cabos and normally paid at the end of the stay. The appropriate amount scales with the size of the team and the length of the stay — ask for guidance when you book so it’s planned, not improvised.
Can I request a fully staffed villa if the listing says “chef on request”?
Often, yes. Many villas can be upgraded to a fuller service level for your dates, subject to staff availability. Tell us the experience you want and we’ll confirm which villas can deliver it.
Plan the service level, not just the villa
The villa gets you the view. The team is what makes the week feel effortless. Tell us your dates, your group, and how you want the days to run — we’ll confirm exactly which villas can deliver that level of service, in writing, before you commit.
